Chapter Twenty-Three

The inside of the tree was dark, but Dax was able to feel some of the essence around him. He could feel the energy, and he could feel an overall connection to the essence node. In a way, that was what was most important, he suspected—for him to try to find a connection, and to try to find understanding, so that he could better understand what more he might be able to do.

It wasn’t just his essence. It wasn’t just the silkshatter essence. All of it was essence. It was just different aspects of it. Even the Silkshatter Queen’s node was little more than a different type, and connection, to that same channel, wasn’t it?

“You look like you’re studying this tree. But maybe that’s a good idea because I have a hard time thinking about how it’s even possible that we are here, inside of a tree.”

Dax chuckled. “It’s the tree.”

“I get that,” Rochelle said.

Dax shook his head. “No. I don’t mean it like that. I mean this is the tree, and we know that there is power to be found inside of these trees. All of these trees have a potent essence, right? The I’haran view them as sacred in a way. Filled with life essence—or, at least, that was the way it looked to me at first. But what if it wasn’t life?” He turned to her. “What if I saw just one manifestation of the essence they contained as they were growing?”

“You mean like your fenestrations?”

“Right. The trees can draw essence. When I was here before, I saw it. I could see the way it was concentrated, and I could feel the way they had used the tree, whatever it was, to channel that power in some fashion. And it seems significant, though I’m not entirely sure why, nor do I know what it means. But I keep coming back to the I’haran, and what they know of essence, and what they know of how to connect to it. I keep coming back to that because I think that is the key here.”

“What part?”

“It’s just a matter of trying to understand what they do with it. They don’t draw upon any of what we consider the pure aspects of it, do they? Not fire. Not earth. Not wind. Not water. Nothing. They draw upon essence, and they make it do what they want it to do. The tree does the same thing.” He looked over. “And I suppose, in a way, now that I have my connection to it, I can do the same thing.”

“Okay. So explain to me why this matters.”

“I’m not quite sure yet. I feel like I’m close to understanding—close and far at the same time.” He laughed. She frowned at him. “But when I think about it, and I think about what I can do with essence, how I can use it, I can feel something. I keep considering the Silkshatter Queen’s essence a different kind of essence than what the Great Serpent gave me.
